Choral Scholarships - Entry between the ages of 6 and 9 years

The King’s School has enjoyed a long history with Gloucester Cathedral and the Abbey that preceded it. For the last nine hundred years, we have been linked with the Choristers of the Cathedral, a relationship that is still strong today, as King’s has educated the boy Choristers of the Cathedral Choir. In an exciting new chapter of the Cathedral Choir’s history, girls’ full Choral Scholarships will be available from September 2021, bringing equality to boys and girls.

Boys and girls who enter the School as a Chorister will play a central role in the day-to-day life within the Cathedral, and feel privileged to sing in a beautiful and historic setting. Choristers have the opportunity to gain in confidence, as well as acquiring a musical knowledge and understanding of which many adults would be proud.

With a Choral Scholarship comes a significant reduction of the School fees. When the boys and girls come to the end of Year 8, they leave the Cathedral Choir. They are then able to apply for our 13+ Music Scholarship and may be eligible for bursaries from the School and outside agencies to enable them to continue their education at King’s right through to 18 years of age.

What is expected of a Cathedral Chorister at King’s?

  • A genuine passion for music
  • Chorister duties take priority over other school and social activities
  • When a Chorister leaves the Cathedral Choir they are expected to be involved in choral singing within the School

Assessment for a Choral Scholarship

Voice trials are held annually in the Spring Term, but prospective candidates can heard at any time of the year when special arrangements are made between King’s and the Cathedral’s Director of Music. The Cathedral’s Director of Music conducts all voice trials; no special coaching or voice training is required or expected of candidates. A prospective Chorister is asked to bring along a song that she or he enjoys singing; this can be a hymn or a carol. Tests will also include those to measure the quality of the voice, the accuracy of the ear and the ability to pitch a note. Reading aloud is part of the assessment, as all Choristers must be able to read aloud with reasonable confidence.

Candidates for Choral Scholarships will be required to meet the entry criteria for the Junior School and will be asked to complete a Taster Day before a place is offered.

Further information about life as a Chorister can be found here

Bursaries

Our bursary programme is available for entry into the Senior School at any age.

A bursary is a form of financial assistance which is means-tested, i.e. based on parental income. Bursaries are not dependent on academic or co-curricular ability but are awarded to pupils who are likely to gain most from a King’s education and who will contribute fully to the life of the School. Scholarships may be supplemented by bursary assistance if the financial circumstances of the family necessitate it.

All applicants are required to disclose, in confidence, their financial details on our Bursary Application Form, for submission to the Bursar, before a decision can be reached. Both parents are required to provide proof of their income and assets. The level of support varies according to parental income; however, parents need to be aware that the bursary fund is limited. Bursaries are always offered for the duration of the child’s education at King’s, but parents are required to re-submit a new Bursary Application Form each year to notify the School of their current financial circumstances.

If you feel you might be eligible for bursary assistance, please consult the Bursary Policy on the website, contact the Bursar to discuss this further, or select the relevant box on the Registration Form and a Bursary Application Form (together with a copy of our Bursary Policy) will be sent to you. The School reserves the right to make home visits to verify the information provided.

Please note that, whilst we would like as many as possible of those pupils who meet our entry requirements to take up a place at the School, the bursary fund is limited.

For any further queries about bursaries, please contact the Bursar, e-mail: [email protected].
