The Ancient Schools of Gloucester

Written by former History Teacher and Deputy Head of the King’s School Gloucester, David Evans, this new book analyses the evolution of education in Gloucester from the time of the Norman Conquest. It provides full coverage of the development of King’s from the reign of Henry VIII and investigates the medieval schools which existed in the Abbey of St Peter that preceded Gloucester Cathedral.

The book sets King’s in the context of the social development of Gloucester as a whole; it describes the growth of other schools still in existence today, including the Crypt and Sir Thomas Rich’s, and it also tells the story of numerous other schools that are no longer with us. This is the first time an author has brought together the histories of these ancient schools in a single volume.
