Over 200 parents attended the King's Pastoral talk from Dr Dominque Thompson based on her best-selling book, 'How to Grown a Grown Up'.

Dr Dominique Thompson is an award winning national student health expert and a regular commentator on student health matters for the national media. She is a Clinical Adviser to NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence), the Royal College of GPs, Student Minds and the Anorexia Bulimia Care charity. She was the GP member of the NICE Eating Disorders Guidelines Development Committee which produced the national guidance in 2017.

Dominique is committed to improving student health and wellbeing services nationally and has been recognised for her achievements in campaigning for improved NHS funding of student health and raising awareness of UK student health needs.

At the outset of her thought-provoking talk Dr Thompson, explained how parenting in the 21st century means navigating a very different world to the one in which we grew up. Our children are under 24/7 pressure to be ‘always on’ and their ‘best self’ and they are often less prepared for a challenging world.

Dr Thompson gave parents some practical tips as to what we can do to help our children develop the skills they need to thrive in this new world and how we can build our children's confidence and resilience - so they can become a strong, happy and independent adults.  Ultimately Dr Thompson's message was that parents need to 'listen, believe and give hope' to their children.
