King’s Upper Sixth Form pupils had an exclusive interview with Britain’s top political historian Peter Hennessy, before his talk at the Gloucester History Festival.

Peter told them that during his lifetime he had never known a period in history quite so uncertain as it is currently. Historians in the future are likely to look back on 2018/19 as being a year of change – with Brexit, possible parliamentary re-elections, the potential for a new party political structure, or the impending England and Scotland split – all were conceivable in these current “molten” times.

He likened Britain to an “59th minute, 11th hour” type of country and felt that the Brexit negotiations would go to the wire and it would be the Heads of State finalising the deal on 29th March 2019.

The pupils then had the opportunity to ask Peter a few pertinent questions before he gave his sell-out talk at this year’s History Festival.
