Architecture Enrichment Project
Inspiring Young Architects: Design Technology enrichment project for pupils in Years 7 and 8.
In a bid to foster creativity, critical thinking and appreciation for architecture, a Design Technology enrichment project was recently on offer for pupils in Year 7 and Year 8. This project combined an exploration of our built environment with hands-on artistic expression.
Starting with an engaging session on architecture, pupils learnt more about the world of architecture, exploring various styles, historical significance and the role of buildings in shaping communities. However, the true experience unfolded during a brisk tour of Gloucester.
Pupils were encouraged to look beyond the mundane and cast their gaze upwards, to look at the city's architectural treasures. As they walked through the historic areas, they noticed an array of structures, each bearing a unique tale of craftsmanship and heritage.
Back in the classroom, the pupils, divided into groups, were tasked with a challenge: to select a building from their tour and recreate it in light relief using simple materials and techniques. This hands-on activity not only honed their design skills but also encouraged collaborative teamwork and problem-solving.
Equipped with wood, cardboard, paper, glue and paint, they created miniature replicas of Gloucester's architectural gems. From the grandeur of buildings around the Cathedral to the charm of medieval properties, pupils were encouraged to experiment with different techniques, allowing them to explore the various aspects of design technology.
All the pupils did incredibly well and thoroughly enjoyed working on this project which not only enriched their understanding of architecture, but also instilled in them an appreciation of the rich culture in their city.
