Netball Showcase Spectacular
On Wednesday 13th March, the Senior 1st VII netball team faced what was anticipated to be the match of the season against Cheltenham College, and indeed, it lived up to expectations.
Following a loss to Cheltenham College earlier in the season, the girls had been working hard to improve their performance, focusing especially on refining their back line passes and enhancing their through-court play.
The dedication and hard work of the team were evident throughout the season, with their results moving in an upwards trajectory. With each passing week, team morale had been on the rise, bolstered by the collective determination to overcome challenges and strive for excellence.
As the crowd gathered with their painted ‘King’s’ faces, the girls in the team took to the court. They began the game with remarkable control, swiftly moving the ball towards the goal. The defence showed exceptional tightness, gaining crucial turnovers. The first quarter ended with King's leading 11-8, setting a strong foundation for the match.
Maintaining their composure, the girls added another 11 goals in the second quarter, with Cheltenham College closely matching their pace. Half-time saw the players regrouping for a team talk, while pupils engaged in a shooting challenge, adding to the spirited atmosphere.
The second half commenced with a shaky start as the team struggled with centre passes and converting consistently. Despite this, they managed an 8-8 draw in the third quarter. The final quarter was both thrilling and nerve-wracking, with the atmosphere electric. Though fatigue set in, the girls maintained their resolve.
With a tied score of 37-37 and only 30 seconds remaining, King's secured possession. Daisy's remarkable mid-range shot gave them a crucial lead. Cheltenham College had only 20 seconds to level the score from their centre pass. However, King's defense, led by Kitty, stood firm. In the closing moments, a crucial tip from Kitty prevented Cheltenham College from converting, securing a thrilling victory for King's.
Amidst the excitement, King's emerged triumphant, showcasing their resilience and determination in a match that will be remembered as one of the season's highlights.
As we reflect on this season with just one game to go, we are proud of the direction that all netball is moving in. We have had some brilliant results this year and some well spectated fixtures, we hope that this continues to grow and netball continues to thrive in years to come.
A special mention must go to our fabulous Upper Sixth pupils, Amelia and Lauren. Both girls have shown incredible leadership this year and have acted as amazing role models to the younger students in the team and those in the school. Thank you to both pupils for their commitment shown to the senior programme this year. What a fabulous end to your netball career at King’s!
