Incredibly high standard at the Fendick Competition
On Thursday 18th March 2021 we held the final of the Fendick Competition in the Turing Room of the recently refurbished Dulverton House. Only one family member and the judges were actually present and the rest of the audience watched the event at home, via Zoom.
This annual research and public speaking event is one of the academic highlights of Sixth Form at King's and this year's six finalists, and their topics, were:
Isabelle: Maths as a man-made concept
Lorelie: Anne Boleyn- the perfect example of how strong women have been treated throughout History
Christian: Hang the DJ (an analysis of Roland Barthes’ thesis ‘Death of the Author’)
Owen: The Windrush Scandal – a stain on the British conscience that can never be erased?
Esme: The Beatles – were they really the ‘greatest of all time’?
Lilly: A Little Bit ‘Psycho’ (an investigation of psychopathic traits in the general population )
The evening was hotly contested, all the speeches were of an incredibly high standard and the judges, Miss Harriet Mitchell, Mr Eamonn O’Sullivan, Mr Richard Graham MP, had the tough task of choosing a winner. The pupils covered a wide variety of topics, well researched and academically well beyond what they are studying in school. The judges said how they had given them things to think about long after the event is over!
Following the confident presentations, with questions from the floor, the judges selected Christian as the winner this year and the runners-up were Esme and Isabelle
A huge well done to everyone who took part and particularly to Christian!
