The vibrant city of Bristol was the location for our human geography Sixth Form field trip.

Our first site was the new development of Wapping Wharf at the Harbourside, with its eclectic mix of independent shops and restaurants (many of which are housed in converted shipping containers).

We then moved on to the more “gritty” area of Stokes Croft with its graffiti-adorned buildings and colourful characters. The pupils carried out several surveys in order to compare these areas in terms of their environmental and retail quality as well as the more abstract sounds and smells.

After lunch we went to two contrasting parts of the Cotham ward where we looked at inequalities between two residential areas.

There were opportunities to experience the retail offerings during the day: the unique Stokes Croft China gallery was popular and many of the pupils bought a piece of local art. Cabot Circus was altogether more mainstream and gave us a chance to escape the November chill on our walk back to Temple Meads Station.
