From the contemporary art of Kiki Smith to the aged, hand carved totem poles from Haida Gwaii, Second Form saw many different types of art on their trip to Oxford. On January 22nd, they went to the Pitt Rivers Museum and Kiki Smith’s exhibition: “I am a Wanderer”.

The Pitt Rivers Museum holds over 55,000 artefacts which show examples of culture, music, gods and art. Walking through the museum, they sketched their own totem poles inspired by things they had seen. Art scholar Emma remarked:

It was interesting to see the variety of art throughout the years from different tribes.

Kiki Smith’s exhibition “I am a Wanderer” was full of striking art including themes of birth, fairy tales and animals. Her artwork includes multiple different styles all on one piece. Some of her pieces were expressed by being printed onto tapestries rather than canvases. She has made many models and photographs. Students sketched certain aspects of Kiki Smith’s artwork such as characters, symbols and nature. Afterwards, they made some origami of birds, a common theme in lots of Kiki Smith’s work.

Afterwards, Second Form returned to school on a coach buzzing with excitement about what they had seen!
